DGP Tripura Anurag Dhankar found dead at the police Headquarters in Agartala.
Tripura Director General of Police (DGP) Anurag Dhankar was found “grievously ill” inside his office at the state police headquarters in Agartala and rushed to the Govind Ballabh Pant (GBP) Hospital, where he was declared “brought dead”. He was 60.
Dr Pradip Bhowmik, Head of Department (General Medicine), GBP Hospital, said Dhankar was brought to the institute at around 12 pm.
“When he arrived here, vital signs like pulse, blood pressure, respiratory response, etc, were absent. We still tried to resuscitate him with CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation). When no sign of life was seen despite all our efforts, we declared him dead at 12.48 pm,” Dr Bhowmik said.
“We don’t know what the cause of death was at this point. We are sending the body for post-mortem examination,” he added.
Kiran Dinkarrao Gitte, Health Secretary, who was seen at the hospital, said, “His (DGP’s) body was found in his chamber. We brought it to the hospital”.
Meanwhile, Chief Minister Dr Manik Saha, who is also in charge of the Health and Home Departments,
rushed to the state police headquarters soon after Dhyankar was found “grievously ill” in his chamber.

Saha interacted with officers but left the complex without meeting the media or taking any questions.
Dhankar’s regular tenure ended in June this year. However, under the Tripura Police Act and certain court judgments, an incumbent DGP is entitled to an additional 11 months of service. He was continuing in office under this provision.
From Tripura to Central deputation
Dhankar, a 1994 batch IPS officer, had served in numerous assignments in the state, across the country, and internationally.
Prior to his appointment as Tripura DGP in May 2025, he served as DGP (Intelligence), additional DGP, IGP (Law and Order) (2013-2016) and other offices of the state police apart from his time at the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and Border Security Force (BSF) on central deputation.

Dhankar was also awarded the Police Medal for Meritorious Service and the President’s Police Medal for Distinguished Service, among many other accolades.
He also represented India at the UN Mission to Kosovo during 2003-2004.
