Rajya Sabha passes Tribunals Reforms Bill, 2026
The Rajya Sabha on Tuesday (August 11, 20260 passed a Bill to set up a National Tribunal Commission to select chairpersons and members for various tribunals across the country. The Bill was passed by the Lok Sabha on Monday (August 10, 2026).
Earlier, Opposition INDIA bloc parties staged a walkout from the Upper House in the post-lunch sitting after Leader of Opposition Mallikarjun Kharge was not allowed to speak by the Chair, as the Upper House debated The Tribunals Reforms Bill, 2026.
Replying to the debate on the Bill, Minister for Law and Justice Arjun Ram Meghwal said tribunals play a complementary role to ensure speedy justice. Under the Narendra Modi government, rationalisation of Tribunals started in 2016. The government later brought the Tribunal Reforms Act in 2021. – PTI

The total income tax liability of entities filing Income Tax Return-7 (ITR-7) was ₹1,043 crore in Assessment Year 2025-26, about three times the liability five years ago, Parliament was informed on Tuesday (August 11, 2026).
ITR-7 is filed by charitable or religious trusts, political parties, universities/colleges/ research institutions. According to provisions of the Income Tax Act, 1961, income derived from property held under trust wholly for charitable or religious purposes is exempt from income tax, subject to fulfilment of the conditions prescribed under the Act.
In a written reply to the Rajya Sabha, Minister of State for Finance Pankaj Chaudhary gave details of the income tax liability of the entities filing income tax return in Form ITR-7 (which inter alia includes activities of providing relief to the poor, education, religious, medical, yoga etc.) in the last five years.
The total tax liability of entities filing ITR-7 increased from ₹356 crore in AY 2021-22 to ₹1,043 crore in AY26. In AY23, the liability was ₹419 crore, ₹816 crore in AY24, and ₹781 crore in AY25, according to data presented in Parliament. – PTI

However, he said his concern is the lesser family income limit fixed for availing the benefit. He said, “the current annual family income limit fixed for availing this scheme is fixed at ₹3 lakh per annum, which is very less and there is urgent need to revise this limit.”

In its notice, Mr. Tagore alleged that lathi charges, pellet guns, tear gas, and water cannons were used against students, including women participants, resulting in injuries and widespread public concern, emphasising that these allegations require a full, fair and transparent examination by the Lok Sabha House.
“I seek leave to move an Adjournment Motion to discuss a matter of urgent public importance concerning the police action during the student protest held at Jantar Mantar, New Delhi, on 20 July 2026. Reports and allegations arising from the incident have raised serious concerns regarding the nature and proportionality of force used to disperse the protesters. It has been alleged that lathi charges, pellet guns, tear gas, and water cannons were used against students, including women participants, resulting in injuries and widespread public concern. These allegations require a full, fair and transparent examination,” the Congress leader said.
