OpenAI is still working on that ‘super app’

OpenAI is set to launch an upgraded version of ChatGPT in the coming weeks, transforming it into a “super app” featuring coding tools and AI agents, the Financial Times reports. The move is reportedly aimed at better competing with Anthropic — especially for business users — and moving closer to profitability ahead of a planned IPO. This involves transforming ChatGPT into a bridge that guides free users toward paid products they may actually want, like the coding tool Codex. A senior OpenAI employee told the FT that “Chat is dead.” Thibault Sottiaux, who heads OpenAI’s core product and platform, said the company is building a product “where you have your own personal agent that can help you with everything in your life, both personally and at work.” If this rings a bell, it’s because rumors of OpenAI’s super app ambitions have been circulating since last year. In March, The Wall Street Journal reported that the plans mark a major strategic pivot for the company after it rolled out numerous standalone products in 2025; executives now say they’re dropping “side quests” such as the video generator Sora.
