Mobileye CEO and founder Amnon Shashua intends to resign from his leadership role after approximately 29 years, as the company ventures into the realms of robotaxis and humanoid robots. However, Shashua will continue serving as CEO until Mobileye finds a suitable replacement, as per a recent regulatory filing. Initially, Mobileye was involved in the production of computer vision chips which were inspired by Shashua’s academic work at Hebrew University in Israel. Over time, the company expanded and became a prominent supplier of chips that are used in automotive safety and driver-assistance features. Mobileye, which had the biggest IPO in Israel’s history, was acquired by Intel in 2017 for $15.3 billion and became a public company again in 2022, with Intel being its largest shareholder. Under Shashua’s leadership, Mobileye shifted from selling chips to automakers to developing its own autonomous driving systems, which are now supplied to Volkswagen and MOIA. In January, Mobileye acquired Shashua’s robotics startup, Mentee Robotics, for $900 million, as part of “Mobileye 3.0,” a new phase focusing on robotics and automotive AI. The company also announced in June that it would be launching its own robotaxi service in a U.S. city by 2027.
