The India Meteorological Department issued a red alert for most of the city and forecast thunderstorms, gusty winds and heavy rain in isolated areas over the next few hours. The weather department forecast light to moderate rain and thunderstorms in several areas, with showers expected to continue in the national capital over the next three days.

The Supreme Court directed the Bar Council of India to involve the Attorney General and Solicitor General in all policy decisions. A bench headed by Chief Justice Surya Kant, hearing pleas challenging BCI chairman Manan Kumar Mishra’s prolonged tenure and seeking his removal, said both law officers should be “actively associated” with every policy decision of the council. The Ganga river crossed the warning level in Varanasi today. The authorities have halted boat operations and intensified surveillance in flood-affected areas.

According to the Central Water Commission, the river was flowing at 70.29 metres, above the warning mark of 70.26 metres. The danger level is 71.26 metres, while the highest flood level is 73.90 metres.

Schools in Jharkhand’s Garhwa and Latehar districts remained closed following an India Meteorological Department (IMD) flash flood warning for 10 districts amid heavy rainfall. While Latehar ordered schools to remain shut today, Garhwa announced a two-day closure till Thursday. Teachers and staff have been asked to report to schools for non-academic work. Schools, however, remained open in Palamu. In Jamshedpur, the Kharkhai and Swarnarekha rivers crossed the red mark after yesterday’s rain. (PTI)

The Bombay High Court ordered a CBI investigation into the 2020 death of celebrity manager Disha Salian following a petition by her father, Satish Salian, who alleged that she was raped and murdered. A bench of Justices Sarang Kotwal and Ranjitsinha Raja Bhonsale directed the CBI to register an FIR, record her father’s statement and take over all case papers from the Mumbai Police. While police had earlier concluded that she died by suicide.

Days after controversial remarks by Sunni Islamic scholar Kanthapuram A P Aboobacker Musliyar, Kerala Chief Minister V D Satheesan today opposed the comment that women should remain confined to their homes. Speaking at a press conference, Satheesan said such a position was not in line with Kerala’s progressive tradition and stressed that women should participate in all spheres of life. Reacting to Kanthapuram’s remarks at an Islamic conference in Kochi, where he said bringing women onto public platforms would lead to “great destruction” and that Islam prescribed purdah, Satheesan said the government could not agree with the statement in any manner. CM also said that such a view amounted to a misinterpretation of Islamic history.

A 40-year-old woman has been booked for killing her four-month-old twin daughters before attempting to take her own life at their home in Bengaluru’s Vajarahalli, police said. According to the complaint filed by her husband, the accused had been undergoing psychiatric treatment and was diagnosed with postpartum depression and hormonal imbalance after the birth of the twins through IVF in May. Police said her husband found her attempting to hang herself inside a locked room on September 1, while the two infants were found dead in the same room. Doctors suspected that the babies had died due to drowning. (PTI)

Delhi recorded a minimum temperature of 28.4 degrees Celsius, while the India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecast moderate rain during the day. The maximum temperature is expected to reach around 35 degrees Celsius.

The Supreme Court is set to hear today a remission plea filed by life convict Ravindra Pal alias Dara Singh, who is serving a life sentence for the 1999 murder of Australian missionary Graham Staines and his two minor sons in Odisha. In July, the court had directed the Odisha government to decide on Singh’s remission plea within a month.

Three men aged between 22 and 25 drowned in Sanjay Lake near Kotla Gaon in east Delhi’s Pandav Nagar area on Tuesday evening, police said. A PCR call was received around 7.30 pm, following which a police team reached the spot and rescued the men from the water. They were found unresponsive and taken to Lal Bahadur Shastri Hospital, where medico-legal formalities are underway, police said.
