Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher Yoshinobu Yamamoto delivered a stellar performance, throwing a three-hitter during the fifth inning of Game 2 of the National League Championship Series against the Milwaukee Brewers on Tuesday night. The Dodgers triumphed 5-1, taking a strong 2-0 lead in the best-of-seven series.

Teoscar Hernandez and Max Muncy each contributed with solo home runs, helping the Dodgers secure their advantage as the series moves to Los Angeles for Game 3 on Thursday. Muncy’s impressive 412-foot shot to center field marked the 14th postseason homer of his career, breaking the Dodgers’ record he previously shared with Corey Seager and Justin Turner.

Yamamoto allowed a home run to Jackson Chourio on his very first pitch out of 111 but then dominated the Brewers for the remainder of the game. This complete game was not only Yamamoto’s first in the majors but also the first in postseason play since Justin Verlander achieved the feat for Houston against the New York Yankees in Game 2 of the 2017 ALCS. The last Dodgers pitcher to throw a complete game in the postseason was Jose Lima, who did so against the St. Louis Cardinals in Game 3 of the 2004 NL Division Series.

This marks the first time since 1970 that both road teams in the League Championship Series have started with a 2-0 lead. The Seattle Mariners also hold a 2-0 advantage in the ALCS as they head into Game 3 on Wednesday in Seattle. Historically, 24 of the last 27 teams that won the first two games on the road in a best-of-seven series with a 2-3-2 format have gone on to win the series. The only teams to overcome a 0-2 deficit at home in such scenarios were the 1985 Kansas City Royals against the St. Louis Cardinals, the 1986 New York Mets against the Boston Red Sox, and the 1996 New York Yankees against the Atlanta Braves.

In an effort to avoid falling into a 2-0 hole, the Brewers pulled out all the stops on Tuesday. Former Milwaukee slugger Eric Thames rallied fans just before the game, aiming to boost morale.
