“Paul, a bond-servant of Christ Jesus, called as an apostle, set apart for the gospel of God, which He promised beforehand through His prophets in the holy Scriptures, concerning His Son, who was born of a descendant of David according to the flesh” (Rom 1:1-3).
I have often heard people calling the use of the book of Romans to share the gospel “the Romans Road.” I’m not a big fan of this name because it gives the false impression that Paul’s gospel presentation in his letter is specifically “Roman.” But nothing could be farther from the truth. According to the opening words in the letter, Paul claims the “gospel of God” he was preaching was “promised beforehand through his prophets in the holy Scriptures [which are] concerning his Son.” Paul makes a very bold exegetical claim here which he thoroughly defends in the entire letter (see Rom 16:25-26): the gospel of Yeshua (the Son of God and the son of David) is NOT ROMAN! Rather, the gospel is BIBLICAL since it was promised beforehand in the holy Scriptures (i.e., in the book of Moses, the Prophets, and the Writings).
To appreciate Paul’s gospel and why he was not ashamed of it (Rom 1:16), we do not need to purchase a plane ticket to Rome. Rather, we must open our “Old Testament” and pay very careful attention to the way Paul strategically cites the Hebrew Bible to explain and defend the gospel which has the power to save both Jew and Gentile as well as to bring them together to the glory of God within the church (see Rom 1:17; 2:24; 3:4, 10; 4:17, 23; 8:36; 9:13, 33; 10:5, 15; 11:8, 26; 12:19; 14:11; 15:3-4, 9, 15, 21).
Reading the book of Romans as Paul intended, therefore, means we must stop looking to Rome and start acting like the Bereans. “The brethren immediately sent Paul and Silas away by night to Berea, and when they arrived, they went into the synagogue of the Jews. Now these were more noble-minded than those in Thessalonica, for they received the word with great eagerness, examining the Scriptures daily to see whether these things were so” (Acts 17:10-11).
