A construction accident on Savary Island has left two men dead and a third with serious injuries.

Powell River RCMP said they got reports about people trapped under a home that had collapsed on Patricia Crescent on Sunday at about 2 p.m.

Savary Island volunteer firefighters and paramedics learned that the house was being renovated and was being lowered onto a new foundation when it collapsed, said police.

“Two men were located underneath the house by Savary Island Fire and were confirmed deceased,” said Powell River RCMP in a news release on Thursday.

A third man escaped but was taken to hospital with serious injuries. He is expected to recover.

An RCMP investigation determined there was no criminality in what was described as a “tragic accident.”
