About half a kilometre of a key artery in Surrey will be closed starting April 1 for construction of the Green Timbers SkyTrain Station.

As work continues on the Surrey Langley SkyTrain extension, contractors need to close Fraser Highway between 140th Street and 96th Avenue, including all vehicle lanes, sidewalks and multi-use paths.

It will allow crews to safely build new power supply for the future station, as well as roadwork and construction on the foundations, guideway and the station itself.

The work is expected to require closure of the short stretch of Fraser Highway until the end of October. The main alternative route is 96th Avenue.

There will also be intermittent overnight closures (8 p.m. to 5 a.m.) on Fraser Highway between 96th Avenue and 148th Street. Motorists will be directed to 96th by way of 148th Street.

Flaggers and road signs will be in place to direct drivers, cyclists and pedestrians to other routes. Transit users should refer to TransLink signage and TransLink.ca for information on bus service changes.

Project contractors plan to give weekly traffic updates at the Surrey Langley SkyTrain website. The timing of the reopening is subject to change.

The plan is to extend SkyTrain from King George Station in Surrey to 203rd Street in Langley City. The $5.996 billion project is due to be completed in late 2029.
