Looking to get the most bang for your buck at the pumps before the Easter long weekend?

Now’s a good time to fill up that tank, said a gas analyst, with prices hitting as low as $1.45 per litre at a handful of gas stations in Vancouver on Monday morning.

At that price, gas stations are taking a hit, said Dan McTeague, who runs gas forecasting site GasWizard.

“$1.40s is hot dogging it. That’s definitely below cost,” he said.

It costs about $1.50 for stations to buy the gas before a retail mark-up so some stations are probably making up for the shortfall through other products, like premium gas or diesel or store merchandise, said McTeague, who is also the president of advocacy group Canadians for Affordable Energy.

Gas Wizard has pegged the price of regular gas at close to $1.61 per litre in Vancouver on Tuesday based on the price of gasoline, taxes and an estimated retail margin of about eight cents a litre.

And that’s where he thinks prices will be for the next couple weeks, “up or down a couple pennies,” although some gas stations might be cutting into their margins in order to draw in customers and compete on volume.

“Things are getting back to normal” said McTeague, referring to a large spike in recent weeks as some U.S. refineries underwent maintenance, cutting supply and causing prices to climb.

The price hike occurred in the days before B.C. and Canada eliminated the consumer carbon tax on April 1, which meant the expected 17-cent-a-litre tax relief was effectively cancelled out by the increase, leaving many motorists fuming at the pump.

On Monday, online pricing site GasBuddy showed a handful of gas stations with prices in the $1.45 to $1.48 per litre range. Many more showed higher prices between $1.50 and $1.60.

McTeague’s advice for people looking for a good deal on gas: Weekends are better than the week, and wait later in the day to fill up.

Each station has its own way of pricing gas but in Vancouver, it’s not uncommon for stations to start dropping prices in the late afternoon and early evening once they’ve made enough to cover costs, he said.

“If you live in Vancouver, never ever buy your gasoline before 6 p.m. in the evening not unless you want to pay more.”
