Is Ben Mulroney considering a shift from his role as a radio and TV host to that of mayor?
While hosting Premier Doug Ford for a fireside chat at the Empire Club, Ford inquired about Mulroney’s political ambitions. He hinted at the question during his keynote address to the business audience gathered for lunch.
“Ben, I understand we’re going to have a good conversation. We’re going to sit down and have a good chat,” Ford said with a chuckle at the podium. “Be ready. I have a question for you when we get up here. I won’t reveal it until you join me.”
Once Ford and Mulroney took their seats for the discussion, Mulroney was direct. “You had a question for me, sir?” he asked.
Ford paused, surveyed the room, and then shared his curiosity. “Well, just between us 1,300 people and your sister,” he said, referencing Mulroney’s sister, Caroline, who is a member of Ford’s cabinet and serves as Ontario’s Treasury Board president. “Are you going to be running for mayor of Toronto? Because we need something happening down there. Just curious.”
As Mulroney contemplated his response, Ford encouraged him, stating, “I’m sure a lot of people in this room would vote for you, raise money, and support you.”
This marks the first time in a while that Ford has publicly suggested someone other than Mayor Olivia Chow should lead Toronto City Hall. While he previously criticized her during the 2023 byelection, he has generally maintained a cooperative relationship with her and her office.
