Malcolm Brogdon announced his retirement on Wednesday after a successful nine-year career in the NBA, during which he earned accolades as the league’s top rookie and best reserve.
The seasoned point guard had been with the New York Knicks during the preseason, where he was expected to serve as a backup to All-Star Jalen Brunson. However, just a week before the season commenced, he chose to step away from the game.
“I am incredibly thankful to have reached this point on my own terms and to now enjoy the rewards of my career with my family and friends,” Brogdon stated in a message to ESPN. “I extend my heartfelt gratitude to everyone who has been part of my journey.”
At 32 years old, Brogdon was selected in the second round of the 2016 NBA Draft by the Milwaukee Bucks. He captured the NBA Rookie of the Year award in 2017 and went on to play for the Indiana Pacers, Boston Celtics, Portland Trail Blazers, and Washington Wizards.
Brogdon was honored with the NBA Sixth Man of the Year award for the 2022-23 season while with the Celtics, averaging 15.3 points over the course of 463 games.
