The residents must deal with overgrown grass and broken bottles in the park where their children play.

Langaville – Residents rolled up their sleeves to clean up in Ext 8 on Wednesday.

Some volunteers for the clean-up.

“We decided to clean up our neighbourhood because we have had unending service delivery issues. When we approached the Tsakani Customer Care Centre, they told us to go to Brakpan.

We don’t know who to turn to. That is how the forum started,” explained Makhosazana Kunutu of the Ext 8 Forum.

The group cleared stormwater drains that have been clogged for years. The forum also aims to teach residents how to keep the drains flowing.

The group clear a clogged stormwater.

“The drains clog up because people throw in trash and bigger items,” she added.

The group also cleared the overgrown grass and trees in the park and removed broken bottles.

“We found many empty cough mixture bottles containing high alcohol. We suspect our youth mixes the medicines with cold medications and get high. The long grass and trees created a cover for them.

We also found knives hidden in the bushes,” she explained.

Kunutu also condemned those who drink alcohol at the park and break the bottles.

“This park is for our children. We must always keep it clean and safe,” she added.

The group unblocks clogged stormwater drains.

Kunutu said the forum is committed to the upkeep of their community.

“We have had a few volunteers from surrounding areas, like Ext 7. We encourage other community members to join us,” she said.

The forum thanked Moripe and Banele Masha for providing equipment and food during the clean-up.
