Four people in critical condition after gas explosion at North York construction site

Roads in the vicinity were closed as Toronto Police, Toronto Fire, and the Ministry of Labour began investigating the incident. Published on October 14, 2025, this report details a gas explosion that occurred at a North York condo under construction, resulting in four individuals being transported to trauma centers with life-threatening injuries on Tuesday morning.

Three additional people sustained minor injuries and were also taken to the hospital following the explosion. Toronto Fire confirmed that all seven individuals were working at the site located near Esther Shiner Blvd. and Provost Dr. Emergency services responded to a gas explosion reported at 9:15 a.m. in the boiler room on the penthouse level.

“Upon arrival, there was no fire, but crews encountered multiple patients and requested additional EMS units,” stated Paul O’Brien from Toronto Fire Services during a press briefing at the scene. “We had patients showing signs of burns, but there was no fire when TFS arrived.”

The area was cordoned off as investigations commenced. “I can’t provide specific details about the injuries due to privacy regulations,” said Toronto EMS Chief Bikram Chawla at the scene. O’Brien noted that incidents of this severity at construction sites are quite rare. “We don’t often respond to calls of this serious nature at construction sites,” he remarked. “I can’t recall a similar incident in the past couple of years.”

He was unable to confirm how many workers were present at the time of the explosion, when work might resume, or if any residents were living in the building at that moment. “The investigation is still in its early stages, so I can’t say when the workers will be allowed back into the building,” he added.
