TORONTO — Ontario Premier Doug Ford revealed that he confronted a shoplifter at Home Depot over the summer, claiming he threatened to physically confront the individual.
During a speech at the Empire Club in Toronto, Ford emphasized the need for stronger bail laws, arguing that criminals have become increasingly brazen.
He recounted an incident from the summer when he decided to visit Home Depot without his police escort to purchase plants for his cottage ahead of a visit from Prime Minister Mark Carney. Ford described witnessing a man leave the store with two backpacks, followed by security guards who claimed he had stolen items. However, the guards stopped pursuing him due to instructions not to intervene in such cases.
Taking matters into his own hands, Ford said he tracked down the man and demanded he open his bag. When the man refused, Ford claimed he threatened to “kick his ass all over the parking lot” until he complied.
According to Ford, the man eventually revealed a saw blade that the store manager confirmed was stolen. Ford then warned the man that if he ever saw him in the parking lot again, he would face severe consequences. “But that’s what you have to do,” Ford concluded.
