Weheliye Rage and Osaze Ebagua, both from Brampton, Ontario, are facing multiple charges related to an alleged taxi scam in Vaughan, according to York Regional Police.
York Regional Police have arrested two men from Brampton in connection with an alleged taxi fraud scheme in Vaughan.
On September 26 at 8:44 p.m., officers responded to a report of a suspicious vehicle at a commercial plaza located at Colossus Dr. and Famous Ave. The complainant reported being approached by a man who requested assistance in speaking to a taxi driver in a black Honda Civic, claiming the driver refused to accept his payment.
The man asked the complainant to pay for him using his credit card, but the complainant declined and noted the vehicle’s license plate, which was later found to be stolen.
Shortly after, the vehicle was located at another commercial plaza in the Applewood Cres.-Portage Parkway area and was subsequently tracked to a plaza at Islington Ave. and Rexdale Blvd. in Toronto. The same driver and male passenger were reportedly seen attempting to defraud another victim when police apprehended them.
Investigators allege that the driver would swap the victim’s payment card with a stolen card from another victim, withdrawing funds before the victim realized what had occurred.
Weheliye Rage, 34, and Osaze Ebagua, 19, each face seven counts of possession of stolen property valued under $5,000, one count of obtaining property by false pretenses under $5,000, and one count of disguise with intent.
Authorities believe there may be additional victims and encourage anyone with information to contact police at 1-866-876-5423, Ext. 7441. Anonymous tips can be submitted to Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 or through 1800222tips.com.
