TORONTO — Canadian Tire Corp. Ltd. is set to start selling the renowned Hudson’s Bay point blankets and has committed to continuing a program initiated by HBC to donate net proceeds to support Indigenous-led initiatives.
Under an expanded partnership with the Gord Downie & Chanie Wenjack Fund, Canadian Tire has pledged a minimum of $1 million annually to support Oshki Wupoowane, The Blanket Fund.
These funds will be allocated for multi-year grants that provide essential support to grassroots Indigenous organizations, as well as reconciliation action grants for one-time projects and events.
While the HBC point blankets are currently popular among consumers, they carry a complicated legacy due to their ties to the company’s colonial history. The Blanket Fund was established in 2022 to promote truth and reconciliation, backed by an initial investment from the Hudson’s Bay Foundation and a commitment to donate 100% of the net proceeds from the sale of Hudson’s Bay point blankets.
Earlier this year, Canadian Tire acquired HBC’s intellectual property, including the iconic Hudson’s Bay stripes, for $30 million as part of the retailer’s winding down process.
