IITs to set up dedicated mental health cadre following student suicides
Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) are considering a dedicated cadre of mental health professionals to support the psychological well-being of students and faculty, news agency PTI reported, citing IIT Directors. Several IITs have faced scrutiny following student suicides on their campuses this year. However, directors of two IITs said the proposal to establish a cadre had been discussed for at least two years and was not a response to the recent deaths.
“Counselling is available to students across all campuses at present. Some IITs have engaged with third-party apps while many have counsellors on campus, but that is not enough for the kind of student strength on campuses and a sustainable and long-term solution is being explored,” an IIT Director told PTI.
“Mental health initiatives have been at centre of attention at IITs in previous years, and it has been deliberated upon since at least two years that IITs should have a proper cadre for mental health professionals, which not only provides a support system to the students but to faculty members and any staff member on campus,” he added.

Call as many BJP-RSS goons as you need. We are not the ones to get scared. We are not the ones to back down. This fight is not going to stop now! On Monday, we will also meet the Chief Justice and demand that when the Constitution is being torn to shreds on Delhi’s streets and democracy is being crushed, the guardians of the law cannot sit with blindfolds on,” Gandhi said in a post on X.
