In recent times, the platform has faced well-publicized outages and performance issues, allowing Cursor to capitalize on the situation. This AI startup, now part of SpaceX, unveiled Origin this week – a code-hosting platform for developers to collaborate on codebases, browse and edit them, manage pull requests (edits by others seeking inclusion in the main codebase), and store them in repositories. This move aligns with Cursor’s previous focus on providing automated web development services through its AI Code Editor. Cursor has mentioned that “agent native” features will soon be accessible for Origin, but hasn’t provided much information about it at this time. The firm claims to be constructing a broader ‘app ecosystem’ to facilitate more comprehensive coding initiatives within Origin. Notably, employing Origin isn’t a prerequisite for users to cease utilizing GitHub. Certainly, Origin is built to enable collaboration between developers and GitHub, enabling seamless exchange of code between the two platforms. Cursor’s blog states, “Your GitHub repositories can coexist with those hosted by Cursor.” Link your GitHub account with Cursor, choose your organization, and you will be able to view the repositories that can be synchronized. Choose one and the Cursor brings it in.”. Origin’s launch takes place amidst growing dissatisfaction due to a perceived decline in GitHub’s performance.
