Despite having to dispose of most of its public investments last month, Situational Awareness, a hedge fund specializing in AI, is continuing to take significant risks. This week, the fund invested a substantial sum of $400 million into Source Foundry, a start-up established by Stanford researchers. Their objective is to advance chip production at a faster and more affordable rate, as reported by The Wall Street Journal. Its total investment in Source Foundry now amounts to $500 million. Situational Awareness was established by Leopold Aschenbrenner, a young man in his mid-twenties who previously worked at OpenAI and lacked trading experience when he started the fund in 2024. Initial results were apparently successful, yet the fund encountered significant losses during the recent months due to the decrease in AI infrastructure stocks’ value. In late July, Situational Awareness disposed of the majority of its publicly traded assets to Citadel, managed by Ken Griffin. However, the fund retained its Anthropic shares. The management of its assets is said to have decreased from $20 billion to $10 billion. However, there is a positive note as Aschenbrenner didn’t allow these obstacles to interfere with his wedding.
