Netflix paid $587M for Ben Affleck’s AI filmmaking startup

Netflix disclosed in a recent regulatory submission that they purchased InterPositive, a startup established by actor and director Ben Affleck, for $587 million in cash. The streaming platform announced the acquisition back in March, with Affleck expressing his desire to ‘preserve the strength of human ingenuity’ in a statement. Affleck states that InterPublic’s AI technology aids filmmakers in enhancing their footage during post-production, primarily by addressing issues arising from real-world production obstacles like absent shots, background alterations, or improper lighting. When Netflix made the announcement, they stated that the whole InterPositive team would be part of their company, with Affleck taking on the role of a senior advisor. However, the details regarding the financial aspect of the agreement were not revealed. According to a later article in Bloomberg, the transaction may be valued at approximately $600 million. The latest financial report from Netflix revealed that approximately 300 of their productions have incorporated generative AI technology.
