Islamic State members held for years in a Syria prison say they know nothing of the world

The Gweiran Prison, now called Panorama, in Hassakeh, Syria, holds around 4,500 alleged Islamic State members from various nationalities, captured during the fall of IS’s caliphate. The Associated Press visited the facility following the ouster of Syrian President Bashar Assad, which has intensified focus on detention centers in northeast Syria holding approximately 9,000 IS members without trial. Guarded by the U.S.-backed Syrian Democratic Forces, these centers face security threats, especially after IS captured weapons from abandoned posts. Concerns about potential IS attacks to free detainees persist, highlighted by a deadly prison storming in January 2022. During the visit, detainee Maher, an Australian nurse, expressed his desire to return home and lamented his prolonged detention without trial. The situation underscores the ongoing challenges in managing IS detainees amid Syria’s shifting political landscape.
