In Summary. Posted:. 9:39 AM PDT, June 20, 2026. John Jumper, a recent Nobel Prize winner in chemistry, revealed on Friday his transition to Anthropic following almost a decade at Google DeepMind. In a post on X, Jumper expressed gratitude towards DeepMind CEO Demis Hassabis for trusting him to lead the AlphaFold team just six months after completing his PhD. He also acknowledged the entire GDM team for their valuable teachings on conducting exceptional scientific research. As depicted above right, Jumper remarked that GDM is a unique location, and I eagerly anticipate learning about their future astonishing discoveries. According to Bloomberg, Jumper played a significant role in creating coding tools at Google, but the company has faced challenges in marketing them to corporations. Noam Shazeer, a co-founder of Character AI, revealed this week that he is departing from DeepMind, but will be joining OpenAI instead. Shazeer’s former colleague, Jumper, along with Hassabis, was awarded the Nobel Prize in 2024 for their groundbreaking work on AlphaFold. This AI model is capable of predicting the 3D structure of proteins using their genetic sequences.
