Mechanised sailing vessel experiences engine failure off Oman

A mechanised sailing vessel has experienced an engine failure off the coast of Oman, and the crew has safely transferred to a liferaft, according to a post by the Indian Embassy in Muscat on X. A rescue operation is currently under way with ships in the vicinity, coordinated by Omani authorities, the post stated.

Virat 1 was sailing off the coast of Oman, reportedly with 14 Indian crew members. The incident comes amid heightened tensions in the Gulf region.

Often based in Mumbai and Mandvi, Indian mechanised sailing vessels are smaller crafts that carry limited supplies, typically perishable food items, to the Persian Gulf countries.

Virat 1 was reported to be 50 metres in length and 12 metres in breadth.
