In India, people get bombarded with numerous calls daily, from spam and fraudulent schemes to delivery agents and financial firms trying to reach them. While apps like Truecaller and the government’s CNAP system can reveal a caller’s identity, simply knowing their name is frequently insufficient. That’s why Equal AI is developing an assistant that can answer calls for you, collect details, and explain the reason for the call. The Android app, launched last year, has already grown to over a million monthly active users and more than 300,000 daily active users. The app analyzes incoming calls and shows you why the person is calling. The dialer then offers quick reply suggestions such as “Leave the delivery by the door” or “Give it to the neighbor,” which the AI reads aloud to the caller. You can also enter a personalized message for the AI to speak aloud. Equal AI announced today that it has raised $30 million in Series B funding, led by Prosus Ventures and Tomales Bay Capital, with participation from Think Investments and Valiant Fund. The app records calls, allowing users to view the recording, transcription history, and a summary directly within the app. The individual investors include PhonePe founder Sameer Nigam, Zubin Bharti Mittal of the Airtel Family Office, Skyflow AI co-founder Anshu Sharma, Meta India and Southeast Asia VP Sandhya Devanathan, and CtrlS Datacenters Chairman Sridhar Pinnapureddy. With this latest round of funding, the company has now raised more than $42 million in total. The investment is divided into three tranches, with the startup’s valuation changing at each stage based on whether it meets specific milestones — an increasingly popular yet still uncommon model that allows startups to sell equity at varying prices within the same funding round.
