President-elect Donald Trump has requested the U.S. Supreme Court to delay his January 10 sentencing in the New York hush-money case, following a rejection of a similar appeal by a New York appeals court. Trump’s legal team argues that, based on a Supreme Court ruling granting presidents broad immunity from prosecution, he should be immune from prosecution and sentencing as president-elect. They claim that proceeding with the sentencing could harm the presidency and federal government operations. The Supreme Court has asked prosecutors to respond by Thursday morning, with the sentencing scheduled for Friday, just 10 days before Trump’s inauguration. This case, involving 34 counts of falsifying business records related to a payment to Stormy Daniels, is the only one of Trump’s criminal cases to go to trial. Despite previous delays by New York Judge Juan Merchan, the judge recently ruled that Trump’s lawyers did not prove immunity from the charges.
